The Biggest Mistake People Make by Ma-Ha Photography
As a photographer, our greatest joy is capturing precious moments for our clients. We know as photographers that every moment is important and only comes around once. There are many photographers that refuse to photograph weddings because they know that if they don't get it right the first time they don't get a second chance to make it right. On the other hand there are also some photographers that either are attracted by the money or just don't know what they are getting into when they decide to photograph a wedding. The first wedding that I did was the most nerve racking thing I have done as a photographer. Why? I knew how much it meant to these people and I didn't want to mess it up. I didn't know these people until a day before the wedding but yet here I am photographing their wedding. So why would someone hire a new photographer that they don't know to photograph their wedding? They did it for the same reason many people do it. They didn't want to spend a lot of money. So did they mess up by doing so? I cant say. I know that I did the best I could and they loved the photos but often that is not the case.
Some people have the notion that they can just get photo’s from the guests at the wedding. This leaves it up to them to get a good shot. This also cuts out the formal shots. Now some would say that’s ok but often think years later how they wished they hired a photographer or a better photographer. I can not tell you how many people I talk to that regret their choice for a photographer.
The other mistake people often make is not getting regular family portraits. Life goes by so fast and people just forget or don’t have the time. Then as they get older they wish they had those memories to share. It’s bothers me think about the age we live in. I remember as a kid how my family and relatives use to take photos at Christmas time and birthdays. They got them developed and showed them to people. Then years later pull them out to reminisce. Today people all use their cell phones. Ever try pulling photos off an Iphone to print? Not the easiest thing to do. Too often the phone gets broke and the photos are gone forever.
I photographed a wedding this last summer. One of the photographs I took was of the groom and two of his sisters all hugging on the dance floor. I thought it was a nice shot and added it to the collection I gave them. I found out this week That one of the sisters was hit by a car and died. They asked me if I had any more photo’s of her because the one I gave them is the only photo they have. As I sat there a chatted with the groom who was very upset about his loss, he told me he pulled that photo out and was looking at it.
You never know how important the photos you take are or will become as time goes on until it’s too late to fix it. Some mistakes you can avoid are:
Hire a professional for special events. Weddings, graduations, milestone birthdays, etc.
Have family photo’s taken regularly. You can never go back and take them later!
Buy good quality prints from a professional lab. It will be more expensive but in 20 years the photos will still look as good as the day you got them.
